Dating back to the 1st century BC, the galleries of the Catacombs were originally formed by ancient quarrying. As time passed, the network of subterranean tunnels developed into a complex labyrinth of passageways that would ultimately become the final resting place of some 6 million skeletons. These bones were exhumed from various Parisian cemeteries in 1786, when hygiene-related sickness was spreading across the city accompanied by a pungent, putrid odor, forcing the authorities to address the overflowing burial grounds with a large-scale relocation project. You’ll start your tour of this chillingly fascinating site with direct access to the Catacombs, avoiding the long lines at the entrance (regularly a 2-hour wait). Led by your expert guide, you’ll be taken on a 2-hour tour to explore over 2km of the dark tunnels and crypts that make up this  “Empire of the Dead”… Venture 130 steps down for an unforgettable experience in the underbelly of Paris… Shivers and goose bumps guaranteed!
